The Samsung Gem lives! Dummy units heading to Verizon stores

Samsung Gem for Verizon

We broke the good/bad/indifferent news earlier today in our rumored devices forum -- the Samsung Gem has been resurrected, and dummy units are hitting Verizon stores as we speak. The Gem is a pretty basic 3.2-inch Android smartphone with a 3.2MP camera and an 800MHz processor. Not all that much to write home about, but it did see release on Alltel just a few weeks ago.

So, yeah, dummy units are arriving. We've got one more pic after the break, and that's probably as close as we're going to get to this thing. Thanks to you know who!

Ke$ha Says She's 'Disappointed' By Grammy Snub

'I plan on making a lot more records, and hopefully one of them will be Grammy-worthy,' singer tells Vanity Fair.

Last year was full of breakout music stars, including Ke$ha, who ruled the scene with a string of dance-pop hits (and a massive overflow of glitter). But not everyone is a Ke$ha fan: The singer was snubbed when the 2011 Grammy nominees were announced in December.

The starlet recently spoke to Vanity Fair about the Grammy snub and said she's determined to score a nod sometime later in her career. And after calling the Recording Academy's award "not that big a deal," Ke$ha admitted that she was saddened by her lack of nominations.

"Of course I do," the singer said when asked if she wanted a Grammy. "I was disappointed that I didn't get nominated. But I've only been around for a year. I'm friends with the Black Keys, and they were nominated for the first time this year. And they've been around for a decade. That's like half my life, so I really can't be a brat about it."

Ke$ha isn't bitter about the situation either, telling the magazine, "I plan on making a lot more records, and hopefully one of them will be Grammy-worthy."

While she may not be gearing up for the big show on Sunday night, Ke$ha is prepping for the launch of her first North American headlining tour, the Get $leazy Tour. The country-wide trek is scheduled to kick off on Tuesday in Portland, Oregon, and continue through May.

Do you think Ke$ha deserved a Grammy nomination? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry's "Firework," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It," Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and "OMG" and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year's biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn't heard "Dynamite" or "In My Head"?

The love went both ways, with dance music's biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year's VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.

So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.

"You definitely saw tempos go up this year," Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. "And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now."

"I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower," said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. "I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment."

Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: "I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there."

Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.

"I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it," said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. "He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile 'unst-unst.' But it's just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent."

"You have someone like will.i.am, who's like, 'Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,' and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music," Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. "R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year."

Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: "It's actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that's gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z's thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience."

"I think it's caught on this year because the people who've done it have been successful," offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. "Like 'OMG,' with usher, he didn't have success until he made a dance record. He had 'There Goes My Baby' and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn't really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, 'OK, let me just try this out.' It's like Auto-Tune. Like, 'Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.' They end up liking it and doing more of it."

So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.

"I do think it's a blip," Caramanica said. "I don't think that's gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we'll all look back on and go, 'Wasn't that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?"

"At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, 'Let me go back to my soul background,' " Hope said. "When you actually have to say something, dance doesn't really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it's kind of a fad."

"I think music is very cyclical," Eng offered. "So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I'm sure it will phase out at some point."

Wilson called dance music "the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer."

What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

How to install non-Market applications on Android

android
This week's tips series is all about Android, highlighting some the operating system's built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.

When an Android user wants to install a new application, they usually just fire up the Market app, search for it, and install it with a couple of well-aimed button taps.

There are times, however, when you may want to load a non-Market application. For example, a perfectly good application may get banned from the market, but still be available from its original publisher.

By default, Android doesn't let you install non-Market apps due to the security risks involved (not to imply that the Market is entirely devoid of malicious apps...). To tell Android you're a big boy (or girl) and can take care of yourself, do this:

1) Go to Settings > Applications
2) Check the box next to Unknown sources
3) Confirm that you understand the risks

That's it! You are now free to install any application, even if it didn't come from the market. Just be careful!

djtxt: Collaborative Grooveshark music playlists via SMS, Twitter and email

Fresh from the fragrant and bohemian confines of the New York 2011 Music Hack Day comes djtxt, a surprisingly awesome Web app that lets you collaborate on the perfect Grooveshark party music playlist.

All you have to do is run the djtxt 'client' (which is just a matter of opening Grooveshark and clicking a bookmarklet) on a computer that's attached to some (preferably loud) speakers. Anyone can then SMS, tweet or email to add songs to the playlist. It's surprisingly easy and it works really well! Songs are added within a few seconds of an email or tweet being received by the djtxt robot -- we didn't test SMS, but presumably it's just as fast.

If you want to see it in action, just follow the first two steps on the djtxt website, then follow the instructions on the Grooveshark page. We'll be listening to the demo playlist in the Download Squad bunker, so feel free to entertain us with your choice of funky beats! If you like what you see (hear?), set up your own djtxt party, turn the volume up to 11, and rock on. Incidentally, if there's a song that you don't like, you can even send djtxt a 'skip' message -- but you can only do it once every 20 minutes!

If you're at work and unable to test it out, there's a video demonstration after the break.

Justin Bieber's Haircut: Fans Weigh In!

While many Beliebers are gushing over his 'sexy,' 'older' cut, others tell MTV News they miss his signature 'swoop.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber
Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage

This week Justin Bieber made headlines thanks to a new haircut. The Biebs had his famous swooping bangs cut into a shorter, cropped look, and he told talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres he doesn't "really care" what people have to say about his 'do.

But his fans have been weighing in on the new hairstyle anyway, and many of them approve of the haircut.

"I really like it and it actually makes him look older!!!! And for all u down there hating on Bieber well if it was Angelina Jolie I'm sure you'd have something to say so don't hate 'cause he's sexy and he ain't even legal yet," Amanda wrote on MTV.com.

Lilia added, "AAh, he looks better with the new hair! Suits him!"

Beliebers have been debating the star's latest look since he debuted it earlier this week. Coote noted on our site that Bieber is much more than a head of hair. "I think he [looks] sexy ... i don't love him for his hair... i love him because he is sweet, cute and perfect," Coote wrote.

MTV News also took to the streets of New York City to see whether people preferred the "Never Say Never" star's old look or the new one.

"I like it, I think it looks good on him," Catherine said of Bieber's longtime haircut. She added about the brand-new cut: "I like it better than the other one, but I think that a lot of his fans liked the [old] one. ... Everyone loves him for his hair and now he doesn't have it anymore."

Meanwhile, Tiffany loved the original but was blown away by the new version. "I think it's very Bieberish, I like that long swoop. It definitely works for him," Tiffany said before we showed her the updated look. "Oh my god! It's such a transformation! I just love it! He looks so much older!"

"It's just beautiful," Christina explained of the old 'do. "I liked him with his longer hair better. That's just who he was discovered as."

"He looks a little geeky," Sofia said of his famous original hairdo. "It's much better," she said of the cropped cut. "He doesn't look like my brother anymore. He looks five years older. He's so cute."

Which do you prefer: Bieber's long locks or his cropped cut? Tell us in the comments!

UFC 127's Three Stars: Ebersole, Zhang and Hunt

UFC 127 impressed a sell-out crowd in Sydney, even without exciting fights from the main and co-main events. Instead, undercard fighters made their mark.

No. 1 -- Brian Ebersole: No one can accuse Ebersole of a lack of determination. Since 2000, Ebersole has fought in 60 bouts, but got his big break when Carlos Condit had to pull out of his bout with Chris Lytle due to injury. Ebersole, who is from Indiana but now lives in Australia, turned the opportunity into gold, taking a decision from the always-game Lytle with unorthodox strikes and movement.

No. 2 star -- Tiequan Zhang:"The Mongolian Wolf" had a memorable, if short, UFC debut. He submitted Jason Reinhardt with a guillotine in less than a minute, making him the first Chinese-born fighter to win in the UFC.

No. 3 star -- Mark Hunt: We're a few years removed from Hunt's heyday in the Pride Fighting Championships, and Chris Tuchsherer isn't exactly top-flight heavyweight competition. But Hunt's nonchalant uppercut knockout reminded MMA fans why they loved Hunt in the first place.

Dishonorable mention -- Michael Bisping: Trash talk comes along with fighting. It builds up hype for a fight, increases a fighter's popularity and can make the fight game a little bit more fun, if the fighters don't take it too seriously. Unfortunately, Bisping did take Jorge Rivera's pre-fight smack talk seriously. That turned into Bisping throwing an illegal knee, spitting at Rivera's corner and continuing to yell at Rivera after the bell. He apologized, but then called Rivera's camp classless.

John Galliano Declares: I Love Hitler!

On Friday, John Galliano was suspended as the chief designer by House of Dior, as a couple in Paris complained that this fashion guru assaulted them with racial and religions slurs.

Specifically, patrons at a bar called La Perle told authorities that Galliano hurled anti-Semitic insults in their direction, a charge the designer's lawyer "formally denies," adding: "legal action will be taken against those making such accusations."

This allegation may now be harder to deny, however.

John Galliano Loves Hitler

In a newly-released cell phone video, posted by Great Britain's The Sun, Galliano slurs his words and tells a woman: "I love Hitler. People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f---ing gassed."

When asked where he's from, Galliano replies: "Your asshole."

Under French law, the stating of anti-Semitic remarks qualifies as "incitement to racial prejudice." It's a criminal offense that can carry a sentence of up to six months in prison.

Did Xoom Whiff It on WiFi?

Since it was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show last January, the Motorola Xoom tablet has been hailed as the strongest challenge yet to Apple's iPad. However, it faces two possible obstacles to widespread acceptance: Its price, and its lack of a WiFi-only version. The Xoom has both 3G and WiFi capabilities, and it's offered at a price of $800 without a carrier contract.

Archos Arnova 8 and 10 tablets hit the bargain bin (video)

We know, Archos already makes fairly cheap tablets, but believe it or not, the company's going after an even cheaper segment with its new Arnova 8 and 10. The two have been popping up all around the web -- they stopped by the FCC earlier this week and there was an early spec leak from a Russian site -- but now we're finally getting some real details and hands-on impressions courtesy of Charbax, who is quite possibly the biggest Archos fan in the world. The $199 10.1-inch Arnova 10, which we have to say looks a lot like the Archos 101, packs a 600MHz Rockchip RK2818 processor, resistive touchscreen, 8GB of storage, and Android 2.1 -- but before you gag, know that there should also be a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 Rockchip RK 2918 / capacitive touchscreen version coming in April. Meanwhile, the 8-inch Arnova 8 rings up at $150 with the same processor and resistive touchscreen, but only 4GB of storage. If the cut corners don't faze you and you're in the mood for a closer look, we suggest you hit the break for some Charbax video originals.

New 'Never Say Never' Clip Shows Justin Bieber Singing With Fan

The 'Director's Fan Cut' teaser captures the teen sensation performing an acoustic version of 'Baby' with a young girl.

Earlier this week, "Never Say Never" director Jon Chu promised MTV News that his new "Director's Fan Cut" of Justin Bieber's 3-D flick would deliver 40 minutes of fresh footage, including different songs (such as "Favorite Girl"), some more shirtless shots of the teen singer ("Maybe some abs!") and extra scenes of him interacting with fans.

With the recut movie hitting theaters on Friday (February 25), Paramount Pictures has released a clip showing just that: the Biebs hanging out with some of his young fanatical followers. The 71-second promo shows Bieber — pre-haircut, of course — at an intimate gathering in Phoenix. While the pop star gives an acoustic performance on a small stage, his fans beg him to play "Baby," but he jokes, "I don't know that song."

He then declares to a very young fan, "I'll only sing 'Baby' if you come up here and sing it with me." Cue the cuteness. The girl sits on his lap and together they belt out the hit single.

This isn't the first time we've seen Bieber show off an easy, breezy way with his youngest fans. Last year, he popped up on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to surprise a 3-year-old Belieber named Cody who'd become an Internet sensation after her sister posted a video of her crying over the teen heartthrob on YouTube. As he tweeted later, "Makin faces with Cody!"

The re-released "Never Say Never" represents an effort both to goose box-office receipts three weeks after the film's initial opening and to feed the Beliebers' seemingly insatiable appetite for anything and everything connected to the star.

"We originally had a two-and-a-half-hour version of the movie, which we obviously couldn't release," Chu explained to us. "So we started to think about putting stuff back in that didn't have to do with our story but that we knew people would love."

Are you planning to go see the "Director's Fan Cut" of "Never Say Never"? Let us know in the comments.

Gaikai beta goes live, brings Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, Sims 3 and Second Life demos to your browser window

Remember Gaikai, the cloud computing service that lets you demo video games in your browser window without downloading a thing? It's live, meaning it's no longer just us tech journalists that get to give it a thorough try. Provided you have a blazing fast internet connection and both Flash and Java installed, four streaming game demos are a just a click (and possibly a survey, or a short wait) away, including three EA titles (Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, The Sims 3) and Second Life. As we discovered in our initial hands-on, it's not a flawless experience even with a fantastic internet connection, but it's not meant to be -- the entire point is to allow you to adequately sample a game right before making a purchase decision. It's also a free taste of the future, and you don't see those every day.

BufferZone Pro sandboxing software now a totally free download

trustware bufferzone pro free download
Trustware's BufferZone was an early entrant into the desktop sandboxing arena. Sandboxing, of course, is the security-by-isolation system which has since been built into apps like Google Chrome and Adobe Reader X. Recently, Trustware launched a promotion and gave away BufferZone Pro for free -- and now the company is making the discount permanent. From now on, BufferZone Pro will be freeware.

But, wait -- BufferZone still doesn't support x64, and maybe you're thinking that there will be a paid version once a 64-bit Windows version arrives. Not so, Trustware's Efrat Schneider told me in an email: "The product will continue to be free," he replied.

If you're looking for a free way to tighten up security on your Windows system, BufferZone is an excellent app for the job. We'll let you know when the 64-bit version becomes available.

VIDEO: Jenna Fischer: I'd Be Insane to Let My Husband Cheat on Me

In her new comedy Hall Pass (which hits theaters Feb. 25), Jenna Fischer's character gives her husband (Owen Wilson) one week off from marriage to sow his wild oats (a.k.a. have sex with other women). But if you're considering trying this at home, Fischer wants you to know that you might be crazy.

"What sane woman would actually do this in real life?" the actress, 36, asks iVillage. "It's a great idea for a movie. It's a bad idea for your life."

Plus, it seems like the last thing Fischer and husband Lee Kirk (who tied the knot in 2010) need is time off. She gushed to iVillage about their happy relationship, saying when you meet the right guy, "you just know."

Watch our exclusive video interview (above) to find out why the actress is "in denial" about her TV boss Steve Carell leaving The Office, and why she thinks it's easy to fall in love with the wrong people.

AVG LiveKive to launch as Dropbox alternative

When you think of AVG, you probably think antivirus -- probably because it has sat near the top of Download.com's list of most downloaded apps for years. AVG has been tapped by tens of millions of users for malware protection, and the company now hopes those same people will turn to it for synchronized cloud storage.

Called AVG LiveKive, the new service will launch in beta form next week -- competing against apps like Dropbox, SugarSync, and SpiderOak. Users will get 5GB of storage for free and while we assume there will be paid options as well, AVG hasn't posted any details yet.

While AVG's post says users will be able to access LiveKive cloud data from "all their synced devices," it's not clear whether there will be mobile companion apps or if this is strictly a desktop app. AVG does already offer antivirus and backup apps for Android, so we expect to see LiveKive hit the Market as well.
