Reported Chael Sonnen vs. Lyoto Machida bout not happening on fall UFC event

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Chael_Sonnen_180_12.jpg
The reported light heavyweight fight between Chael Sonnen and Lyoto Machida will not be coming to an event this fall, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

Per the report, the fight was only "briefly entertained," but did not come to fruition for UFC 136 in October, and both fighters are awaiting different opponents for the fall.

Sonnen's return is dependent upon getting licensed after his suspension in California came to an end late last month. His alleged need for testosterone replacement therapy could complicate that process after what happened with Nate Marquardt in Pennsylvania.

Machida will be looking to get back into the title picture after a front kick knockout of Randy Couture in April. The win snapped a two fight losing streak for Machida, which happen to be the only two losses of his career.

Penick's Analysis: It was a fight that made sense if Sonnen was going to jump up in weight, and after the things he's said about Machida and Team Blackhouse on Twitter it would have been an easy sell for the UFC. But I'm not entirely surprised that it's not coming to fruition. They still don't know for sure whether Sonnen will even get licensed, and that entire situation needs to be fleshed out before he can return to the cage. It's a little disappointing that it's not happening because of the build up it could have had, and if Sonnen is going to be brought back this is a fight that would have really worked.

Hand Injury Knocks Patricio Pitbull Out of July 23 Title Fight Against Joe Warren

Patricio "Pitbull" Freire, the flashy featherweight who qualified to face Joe Warren in a Bellator championship rematch, has suffered an injury that has forced him to withdraw from a scheduled July 23 match with Warren.

Freire confirmed the news on Tuesday through Twitter, saying that he has fractures of his left thumb as well as ligament injuries that pushed him to the sidelines.

That injury news was originally reported by MMA Junkie, who spoke with Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney on Tuesday.

Freire said that on Saturday, he was told it will take four months to be able to fight again, and is hoping to get his shot at the gold in November.

The 23-year-old Freire holds an impressive record of 17-1 since turning pro in 2004 at the age of 16. The Brazilian's only career loss came to Warren in June 2010 in a controversial split-decision victory that made Warren the promotion's first-ever featherweight champion.

Freire returned for season four's tournament and stormed through Georgi Karakhanyan and Wilson Reis with knockouts before defeating Daniel Straus via decision in the finals.

Instead of waiting around for Freire to return, Warren is off to other pursuits. Even prior to this, Warren asked to participate in Bellator's upcoming bantamweight tournament with hopes of becoming the promotion's first two-division champion. He was granted a spot in the tourney and is scheduled to face former Olympic freestyle wrestling bronze medalist Alexis Villa on September 24 in a first-round bout.

Nate Marquardt Fired Due To Testosterone Replacement Therapy

By <a href="mailto:howie@mmanews.com">Chris Howie</a> <Br>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>

Nate Marquardt finally broke his silence regarding the reason for his failed medicals this past weekend which left the UFC on Versus card from Pittsburgh without a main event and seen Dana White fire Marquardt via video on Twitter.<br><br>

Marquardt, along with his manger Lex McMahon, appeared on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani to discuss the failed medicals and the time line of events that led to a crazy weekend in Pittsburgh.<Br><Br>

The following is a summary of Marquardt's appearance:<Br><Br>

Marquardt says he was not medically cleared for his UFC on Versus 4 main event versus Rick Story because of a snafu with his Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT).<br><br>

Marquardt said in August of 2010 he began feeling sluggish and that his memory was off. His MD did tests, which came back for a diagnosis of low testosterone. He then received clearance from a physician to undergo Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).<br><br>

He began HRT under a Therapeutic Use Exemption* for his fight against Dan Miller at UFC 128 in New Jersey. The New Jersey SAC, which oversaw the Miller bout, approved the testosterone therapy.<br><br>

Says he received a letter around Jan or Feb from the New Jersey SAC acknowleding receipt of his TUE, but reporting that the application was incomplete, and that the treatment was not USADA approved. Nate said his MD was using an "off-label" medication.<br><br>

The New Jersey SAC SACB requires three blood tests and eight weeks off treatment, which he complied with. Says he was off for 10-11 weeks.<br><br>

Nate explains he felt even worse after going off treatment.<br><br>

When he restarted treatment after going off for 10-11 weeks, doctor recommended a "more agressive" theray -injections of testosterone rather than the oral regimen he had been on. Previous treatment was two different bills, one three days per week, the other every other day. The pills regulate the pituitary gland that governs testosterone production in the testicles. Taking testosterone for too long, can cause testicles to cease production of testosterone permanently, leading to sterility.<br><br>

He explains that his mood improved after starting treatment; may have saved his marriage.<br><br>

Two weeks out from the fight he took a blood test which revealed high levels; on the advice of his MD he stopped the treatment. Never the less, the test he took on the day of the weigh ins was above the limit allowed limit by the Pennsylvania SAC.<br><br>

Says he "made a mistake" by not requesting a blood test earlier than two weeks before the fight.<br><br>

Says his blood levels have returned to normal; he and expects to have suspension lifted after a board meeting with the Pennsylvania SAC later this week.<br><br>

Ariel asks Nate if he's going to go back to his doctor and question the treatment. Nate says that he isn't sure it matters at this point.<br><br>

Nate details tests they ran include brain scans, mono test, blood test for other hormones. He then details possible causes including genetic, problem with testicles, pituitary gland problem. Says he isn't sure why he personally has low testosterone. Says he is not a doctor, but needs to take responsibility. as he's the one fighting, not the doctor. Says he is the one that messed up. Nate chokes up.<br><br>

McMahon says the UFC was "incredibly professional" throughout the process; notes they found out about the release like everyone else through Twitter.<br><br>

Nate did not watch the fights on Sunday.<br><br>

Nate is hopeful to return to the UFC. Says he plans on staying at 170 lb.<br><br>

McMahon notes that other promoters blew up his phone with contract offers.<br><br>

Marquardt says he relies on his faith in God, and realizes that with his wife, daughters, he's very blessed.<br><br>

Nate apologizes to the fans. Feels like he let them down, let his family down, let his sponsors down. Hopes they can forgive him.<br><br>

Chael Sonnen vs. Lyoto Machida reportedly targeted for October's UFC 136 event

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SonnenChael_150_27.png
For the last couple of months, Chael Sonnen has been berating several Brazilian fighters through Twitter, taking most of his shots at Team Blackhouse and in particular Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida.

With his suspension from the California State Athletic Commission up, Sonnen told MMAFighting.com last weekend that he'd go up to 205 lbs. to face Machida in his return fight, and it appears the UFC may be making that fight a reality.

According to a report from Fighter's Only, a light heavyweight fight between the two is being targeted for UFC 136 in Houston in October, with verbal agreements in place. Additionally, Machida told Tatame.com that he'd sign on for that fight immediately if Sonnen wants it, and if the Fighter's Only report is accurate, the fight is all but signed.

UFC 136 could feature a Featherweight Championship bout between Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian in the main event, though nothing has yet been signed for the card.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: The Chael Sonnen saga is far from over, but this fight could be huge for the UFC. Machida's coming off the face kick knockout of Randy Couture, and with Chael Sonnen egging him on through Twitter and what will be even more public comments heading into the fight, this would be a very big seller for the organization. However, Sonnen still has the little matter of his "need" for testosterone replacement therapy. After what happened with Nate Marquardt, he's going to need to get approval for his testosterone usage, and that may not be an easy prospect. Of course, if his claim that he absolutely needed testosterone to live his life was a false one, as others he made to the CSAC turned out to be, then the move to light heavyweight may be in part due to getting off the treatment to not deal with the TRT issue. But if the fight gets put together and comes to fruition, it will be an immensely interesting build up, and could make for a great fight.

Tito Ortiz Needs Win At UFC 132, Will Retire If Dana White Asks

Do or Die.<Br><Br>

That's what it is for former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz who steps into the Octagon Saturday against Ryan Bader in what could very well be his last fight inside the UFC's cage if he loses.<Br><Br>

Ortiz hasn't won a fight since he beat Ken Shamrock five years ago and according to a previous interview, had to beg for one more chance in the UFC. Ortiz knows whats on the line when he fights Bader this weekend and spoke about it while on MMAWeekly Radio this week:<Br><Br>

"I can?t make decisions for my future, only Dana can, only the UFC can. There?s nowhere else for me to go. There?s no more Strikeforce. There?s no more Pride. There?s no more WEC. Everything?s been bought by the UFC, and they?re doing a great job of promoting one of the best brands in the world and that?s the Ultimate Fighting Championship. I?ve been fighting for the UFC since day one, since my career began back in 1997, and I don?t plan on going anywhere else. If Dana thinks it?s time for me to bounce, and go somewhere else or hang up my gloves, I don?t feel like it, but if they feel like it, I have no choice. There isn?t much of a choice I can do, besides fight my ass off on Saturday night and get my hand raised to let everyone know that I?m not going anywhere."<br><Br>

Patricio "Pitbull" Freire suffers broken hand, out of Bellator 47 bout with Joe Warren

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_302.jpg
Bellator Fighting Championships had a set plan for Featherweight Champion Joe Warren this year. He was scheduled to defend his title against Patricio "Pitbull" Freire this month at Bellator 47, and then afterward he will be dropping to bantamweight to take part in the season five bantamweight tournament.

However, according to multiple reports, Freire has suffered a broken hand in training, canceling the title fight the two were supposed to have this month. Now Freire will have to wait until after Warren's participation in the bantamweight field to get his shot at the title.

It's a very disappointing setback for Freire, who was out to avenge a loss to Warren suffered in the finals of the season two featherweight tournament. Freire nearly finished Warren in the first round, but Warren came back in the second and third round to eke out a decision. The loss was the only one on Freire's record. As for Warren, he then went on to defeat Joe Soto for the belt during the organization's third season and remains undefeated in Bellator action.

Penick's Analysis: This is a potentially derailing development for Bellator's featherweight division. Freire had a chance to win the belt to keep it active with Warren dropping to the bantamweight division, and now the title will be held up with two challengers waiting in the wings after the current summer series finishes up. But if Freire is held out of action for awhile as it is, Warren could get through the season five tournament and be ready to go in the spring for a title fight. Still, this throws off Bellator's plans for Warren and the division.

UFC boss says Condit one of division's best, "Natural Born Killer" not waiting for title shot

LAS VEGAS - With his second-straight "Knockout of the Night" victory, former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit is quickly becoming a top contender in the UFC's 170-pound division.

Saturday night's UFC 132 event featured a host of incredible knockout victories, but UFC president Dana White deemed Condit's first-round finish of Dong Hyun Kim the best of the bunch, awarding him the bonus and declaring him "one of the best 170-pounders in the world."

But with UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre not scheduled to defend his title until late October, Condit isn't interesting in sitting around waiting for a title shot.

Bellator 46: Mann with awesome KO, Malegarie subs Devree

After a very good Season 4 featherweight tourney, won by Patricio "Pitbull" Freire, Bellator quickly threw together another 145-pound tournament for the summer and it looks to be loaded. Ronnie Mann and Nazareno Malegarie opened up this tourney with dynamic victories at Bellator 46 in Hollywood, Fla.

Mann, a nasty striker, crushed Adam Schindler with a left and knocked him out on the ground at 4:14 of the first while Malegarie (pictured) rolled through a variety of submission attempts and finally made good on a guillotine choke at 1:25 of the third.

Both fighters advance to the semifinals. As long as they came out of their fights unscathed they'll be fighting on July 22 at Bellator 47 in Canada.

Mann's a pretty accomplished fighter on the international scene and it showed against the American Schindler. Born in Thailand, Mann, 24, grew up in England. Before this dominant win, he'd made a name for himself in both Japan's Sengoku and several British promotions.

Schindler, a former high school wrestling star and U.S. Air Force vet, chose to stand and bang with Mann. It turned out to be an awful gameplan.

Just 20 seconds into the fight, Schindler actually rocked Mann with a nice combination. Mann (20-2-1) has too much experience to freak out and came back seconds later with a three-punch combo that stopped Schindler in his place. It got worse from there.

Schindler would close space and throw hard shots, but nothing really landed. Meanwhile, Mann, still in pocket, blasted away with straight punches.

With 55 seconds left in the first round, Schindler was dropped by a beautiful left hook. He fell to his back and got crushed by a right hand as Mann pounced. "The Ninja Kid" then got off eight vicious hammer fists before referee Jorge Alonso stepped in. Schindler was out cold.

"I knew he was going to come in wild so I wanted come straight down the middle. So yeah it worked," Mann told MTV2's Jimmy Smith. "All I heard was my cornerman [Shawn Tompkins saying], 'use that left hook!' So I threw it and caught him."

Malegarie was just as dominant, but used his jiu-jitsu game and improved wrestling to wear down Jacob Devree. The Argentinian training out of Brazil got the fight to the floor whenever he wanted.

He worked for a guillotine submission for over a minute early in the first round. In the second, Devree fought off another early guillotine attempt and then survived the mount position from Malegarie. He was still alive entering the third, but all that submission defense wore him out. Just 25 seconds into the final round, Malegarie scored an easy takedown. Then Devree finally got sloppy with his defense. He pushed Malegarie off to create some space, but left his head exposed. That's death against a Brazliian jiu-jitsu black belt. Malegarie landed another guillotine choke and flipped so he was on top. Devree tapped inside of five seconds. Malegarie, 25, moved to 20-1.

"This is the real Nazareno Malegarie that you've seen tonight," the winner told Smith.

He's probably right. Malegarie lost to Daniel Straus in the first round of the Bellator Season 4 tournament. Straus, a huge featherweight, went on to the final and lost going the distance with very highly-touted Pitbull.

Tito Ortiz shocks with UFC 132 submission of Ryan Bader

Tito Ortiz came back from the brink of extinction at UFC 132 on Saturday night, winning with a guillotine in the first round over Ryan Bader.

Bader was landing intermittent strikes until Ortiz moved inside and landed a right hand directly on Bader's jaw. Bader's knees buckled, and Ortiz jumped on top of him and sunk in an arm-in guillotine. Ortiz squeezed until Bader tapped at 1:56.

He was jubilant after the fight, resurrecting his gravedigger celebration, then jumping onto the side of the cage. He thanked UFC brass Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta for pushing him to win this fight.

Ortiz knew going into this fight that it was win or lose his job. He has been a legend in the UFC, but his last win was in 2006 over Ken Shamrock. He hasn't been a champion since 2003. Battling back and neck injuries, he had never been able to return to that form until Saturday.

For Bader, it was a chance to get back on track after losing for the first time in February to eventual UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, but it didn't happen. Since being on the brink of the a title shot, Bader has gone 0-2, losing both fights by guillotine.

This win may not mean that Ortiz is ready for another title run, especially in the UFC's stacked light-heavyweight division. Nonetheless, Ortiz was on the brink of losing his job and possibly retiring, and he won in convincing fashion. That feat reminds MMA fans of why he is a legend in the sport.

Strikeforce heavyweight Brett Rogers arrested, charged with felony domestic assault and released by Strikeforce (UPDATED)

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Brett_Rogers_mug_shot.JPG
Strikeforce heavyweight Brett Rogers was arrested on Wednesday morning and charged with multiple counts of felony assault for assaulting his wife at their home south of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, according to a report from MyFoxTwinCities.com.

Per a criminal complaint, Rogers' wife was allegedly strangled, beaten with blows to the head and face where a golf-ball sized wound on her face developed and that she lost a tooth during the altercation.

Rogers has been charged with three separate felonies: third degree assault, domestic assault by strangulation and a pattern of stalking conduct. In addition to the felony claims, he's been charged with a gross misdemeanor for child endangerment, as the couple's two children were present during the incident.

His wife did not want to press assault charges, according to the criminal complaint, stating that she didn't want him to lose his job.

Rogers' bail was set at $100,000 with conditions, and he has another court appearance on Friday morning.

It caps off a bad month for Rogers, who was choked out by Josh Barnett on June 18 in the quarterfinals of Strikeforce's Heavyweight World Grand Prix. The loss was his third consecutive defeat inside the Strikeforce cage.

Penick's Analysis: This is reprehensible behavior. The criminal complaint states that one of Rogers' daughters claimed that she had witnessed him assaulting his wife in the past, and that he had hit his two daughters in the past as well. With his wife not wanting to press charges and initially lying to police about how she sustained her injuries, it suggests a long history of abuse and it's an absolutely awful situation for that family to be in. Rogers deserves jail time and any other punishment coming his way for this incident. It's disgusting and inexcusable.

UPDATE: MMAJunkie.com reports that Strikeforce has released Rogers from his contract following this incident. Per the report, the release was confirmed by UFC President Dana White.

UFC?s behind-the-scenes guru gets chance meeting with Obama

PITTSBURGH -- Burt Watson (pictured in the background), the man who you've seen directing traffic at weigh-ins, works tirelessly to keep things running well at UFC events, and he was rewarded with a chance meeting in Pittsburgh. The UFC's main behind-the-scenes man met President Obama while both were at the fighters' hotel, and told his tale to Cagewriter.

The Hyatt Regency in Pittsburgh hosted both the fighters and the president, who was in town to make a speech at Carnegie-Mellon University. Because of Obama's presence, security was tight around the hotel. Watson's room was near the fitness center, so his room had to be checked by Secret Service before the president could go in and do his daily workout. Watson's room was swept by bomb-sniffing dogs and Secret Service agents.

After the sweep, Watson had to turn on the sauna to ready it for fighters. When he entered the fitness center, he saw the president, and asked if he could go in.

"I opened the door, and there was President Obama, pedaling on a bike and reading the newspaper," Watson said. "I started shaking a little bit. There was no one else in the room."

Because of his job with the UFC, Watson has met a who's who of celebrities, but was still blown away by getting to meet Obama.

"I don't get starstruck, because I work with celebrities all the time. It's not my job to get starstruck, but I was dumbfounded. I walked towards him, reached out my hand and said, 'What's up?' He said, 'How are you?' I said, 'Right now? I'm honored.' And he said, 'Nah, I'm honored.' And as I walked out, I thought, 'Oh [expetive]! Did I just walk out of the room with the president of the United States? Me and him!"

He said that the enormity of the situation didn't really hit him until later.

"Not until I walked out of there did it hit me that I was literally one-on-one with the most powerful man in the world. History has a way of making you a part of it without even asking. Never in my wildest, wildest dreams did I imagine that I would meet the President of the United States."

Watson's calm, upbeat demeanor serves him well in his job as the behind-the-scenes man for the UFC. Working for the promotion since UFC 31, he has seen nearly everything the fight world can muster and has taken it in stride. This was different.

"For the first time, I was in awe."

Despite short notice, Brad Tavares sees few drawbacks with UFC 132 booking

Brad Tavares hasn't fought in half a year, but he still received just a month's notice that he'd be fighting Aaron Simpson at Saturday's UFC 132 event.

Despite a shortened fight camp ahead of arguably his toughest opponent yet, Tavares sees plenty of perks in taking the fight - such as gaining bonus points with his bosses.

"You scratch their back, and they'll scratch yours," he today told MMAjunkie.com Radio. "Besides, at the same time, I'm helping my career. Me and my coaches think this is a good fight for me."

Curran finishes Peruvian with Peruvian necktie; Sandro survives tough one at Bellator 46

Marlon Sandro was expected to be the guy producing a flashy finish, instead it was the usually workmanlike Pat Curran who did so during the back end of the Bellator featherweight tournament quarterfinals in Hollywood, Fla.

Sandro, a huge free agent signing for Bellator, had to go the distance with Genair da Silva Jr. to pull out a split decision win. Curran, back down at 145 after a lot of success at lightweight. finished Luis Palomino with a very uncommon submission, the Peruvian necktie at 3:49 of the first round.

Both fighters move into the tournament semifinals in July. Bellator announced that Sandro will face Nazareno Malegarie while Curran takes on Ronnie Mann. Also on that card is Bellator's featherweight champ Joe Warren, who'll battle the Season 4 tournament winner, Patricio "Pitbull" Freire at Bellator 47 in Rama, Canada.

Warren (7-1) hasn't fought at featherweight since he beat Joe Soto last September. The division has added so much talent and developed so quickly, Warren may not even be amongst the top five 145 pounders on the current Bellator roster.

Pat Curran (14-4) would certainly give the smallish Warren a run for his money. Curran was very competitive during his lightweight fights with Bellator. He upset Roger Huerta last May and began the former UFC star's demise. Then he went the distance with top six lightweight Eddie Alvarez.

Tonight in Florida, he looked awesome at featherweight. Possessing heavy hands, Curran dropped Palomino with a huge right, just over two minutes into the fight. A stunned Palomino tried to secure a takedown, but the scramble resulted in Curran eventually scoring his own along the cage and gaining top control.

With his cousin Jeff, a former WEC champ and jiu-jitsu black belt, in his corner, Curran began to show off his quickly improving submission. The 23-year-old worked a d'arce choke. When that wasn't working, he transitioned to highly unusual Peruvian necktie. The pressure of cranking back with hands, hips and legs made it impossible for Palomino to survive.

"Once I just sunk it in, I went for it. I practice it all the time in the gym," Curran told MTV2's Jimmy Smith. "I was glad I got a chance to show it off. I rocked him with the right hand. He felt a little weak while he was still getting his mind back together."

It wasn't as easy for Sandro, No. 5 in the USA Today/Bloody Elbow 145-pound rankings, against the fellow Brazilian da Silva.

The former Sengoku featherweight champ started strong. Just over two minutes into the fight, Sandro dropped da Silva with a nasty left. He jumped on top and pounded away, but the referee Jorge Alonso wisely let da Silva scramble his way out of trouble. Sandro, 34, tried a guillotine choke, but da Silva eventually got his head free.

In the second, Sandro (18-2) continued to land solid shots with front leg kicks and by getting off first with his hands. Da Silva tried to counterpunch, but was way too wild. The pace slowed in the third and da Silva landed his best punch of the fight, a right hand with 3:55 left. Da Silva tried two takedowns against a tiring Sandro and whiffed on both. Sandro made good on 1-of-2 down the stretch.

Cagewriter scored it 30-27 for Sandro, but the judges were split. The Florida trio scored it 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29 for Sandro.

The pressure's on Sandro, the highest-ranked fighter remaining in the field. Frankly, it looks like he might be a little overrated. His only losses are against new UFC signee Hatsu Hioki, and Michihiro Omigawa.

Omigawa lost a disputed decision at UFC 131, but he's been less than impressive in his second chance with the promotion.

We'll find out what Sandro has in North American fight No. 2. The Bellator semis should be explosive. This is an excellent group.

Nate Marquardt Camp Issues Statement Regarding Failed Medicals

By CHRIS HOWIE<Br>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>

During tonight's broadcast of UFC on Versus, Nate Marquardt's camp issues a statement regarding Marquardt's failed medicals that forced him out of tonight's main event which then led to UFC President Dana White canning Marquardt and saying he will never fight for the UFC again.<Br><Br>

Marquardt didn't address the reason behind the failed tests but does say he will speak more on the subject Tuesday:<Br><BR>

"Nate Marquardt was not medically cleared by the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission at UFC on Versus 4. Nate was looking forward to making his welterweight debut and is disappointed by this unfortunate turn of events. Nate wants to apologize to his family, friends, fans and the UFC. This outcome was certainly not what he wanted. At this time, Nate wants to be with those closest to him so he can evaluate his situation over the coming days."Marquardt's manager, Lex McMahon, indicated that his fighter "will personally be addressing all issues this Tuesday."<Br><Br>

What do you think the reason was for the failed tests?<Br><br>

Tito Ortiz Needs Win At UFC 132, Will Retire If Dana White Asks

By <a href="mailto:howie@mmanews.com">Chris Howie</a> <Br>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>

Bader interview: TUF 8 champ not about to fall for Tito?s pity party

Tito Ortiz was in passive-aggressive mode today during the official UFC 132 prefight press conference. Tito claims that he begged for his job earlier this year and said repeatedly during the press conference that no one is picking him to win and because of that he has nothing to lose. This talk started last week when Ortiz started to accuse Ryan Bader of disrespecting him by calling him a stepping stone.

"But Bader made a mistake saying I am a stepping stone back to Jon Jones. I understand why he said it. When I was 28 I felt indestructible too and I was saying a lot of things about what I was going to do too. But I'm not a stepping stone to anyone," Ortiz wrote in a blog for ESPN.com. "No one has ever had an easy fight against me and he made a mistake in saying that I am a stepping stone. Maybe it was a figure of speech, but even if it was it was a little disrespectful to a former world champion."

When we spoke to Bader yesterday, the champ from Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter" reacted strongly, saying he would neverlook past someone like Ortiz.

"I never said that one time. All I said was I wanted to get back to the top and that startsd with Tito here, and that's all I said," Bader said on ESPNRadio1100 (4:45 mark). "He got that from, who knows where? I'm treating not this fight like that at all. This is a a fight I'm taking very seriously and I want to get back to my winning ways."

Ortiz is 0-4-1 in his last fivefights. He's without a win since 2006. Dana White made it clear today that a good performance alone would NOT allow Ortiz to keep his gig with the UFC. Tito needs to win this or he's gone. Bader is a massive minus-500favorite on the Las Vegasodds boards.

The 28-year-old former wrestler at Arizona State had his hand on his chin and smirked for much of the press conference as Tito talked about "hoping" to go out and put on a good performance.

Thanks to His Hype Man, Motivation Never a Problem for UFC Champ Dominick Cruz

Filed under:

Dominick Cruz Mike EastonLAS VEGAS -- Before you ever see one of Dominick Cruz's workouts, you hear it.

More to the point, you hear Mike Easton, who is a little like MMA's version of the magical talking mirror in "Snow White." Only instead of telling you who's the fairest in the kingdom, Easton tells Cruz -- and anyone else within earshot -- who the baddest 135-pound man in the entire world is.

Better yet, Cruz never even has to ask in order to get the answer he wants to hear.

"Yeah, that's right!" Easton shouted as Cruz shadow-boxed himself into a sweat inside the MGM Grand on Wednesday afternoon. "He can't take you down! He ain't faster than you! He ain't ready for this!"

The way Cruz floats across the mat during these sessions, you can hardly tell if he's listening. But Easton -- a short, stocky bulldog of a man who looks a little like a fire hydrant that someone slapped a t-shirt on -- knows that he is. He also knows the value of what he provides the champ during the tough times.

"I'm his hype man," Easton explained. "Also his training partner, but his hype man too. Just like how Muhammad Ali always had somebody talking to him, that's what it is. You always need somebody in your corner that's going to talk you up. It makes you feel good."

It also, according to Cruz, makes you feel not quite so horrible during the necessary evil of the weight cut. That's why as he works to slim down to 135 pounds to defend his UFC bantamweight title against Urijah Faber at UFC 132 this Saturday night, he likes to have Easton right there, reminding him that this particular pain is only temporary.

"When you feel the weakest is when you're cutting weight," said Cruz. "It's very important to have someone in your ear, telling you how strong you are when you're feeling the weakest."

But even though it looks like the easiest job in any champion's entourage, it takes more than a big mouth to be a good hype man. You don't just walk in off the street, tell a guy how great he is, then get a free plane ticket to Vegas out of it.

First, you have to make your hype mean something. And the best way to do that, according to both Cruz and Easton, is to have a personal role in beating down the champ before you build him up. That's where Easton -- who is 10-1 as a pro himself -- really excels, said Cruz.

"Mike Easton's my hype man, but on top of that, he's a sick fighter. The reason he can be my hype man is because I have respect for his fighting abilities. He understands the game. He understands what it takes to win."

A good hype man can even help you off the mats. As Cruz prepared to defend his WEC title against Scott Jorgensen last winter, it was Easton who stood off to the side during Cruz's pre-fight interviews and added a little emphasis behind each one of his answers.

Was Jorgensen ready for Cruz's speed and rhythm? Cruz shrugged at first. No, probably not, he told reporters.

"That's right he's not!" Easton shouted out from behind the media scrum. The effect it had on Cruz was visible and immediate.

Had Jorgensen really figured out his style, or was he just talking himself into thinking so? This time Cruz fired right back. Of course he was talking himself into it, said the champ.

"Yeah, he is!" shouted Easton. "He's got no idea!"

Suddenly, everyone in the room was feeling motivated. You could almost see reporters looking at one another and thinking, where can I get one of these hype men? Does he do parties?

But to hear Easton tell it, having a motivator in your corner isn't just a nice little perk -- it's downright necessary.

"You remind somebody what's going on in their life, what all the blood, sweat and tears are for," he said. "You do that, you'll have them ready to bite the back of a chair. I learned it from my father, actually. He's the same way. That's my hype man."

And even though Cruz gives no outward indication that he's enjoying it, he's come to rely on it, he said.

"The point of it is that, a lot of it, you're not even paying attention to it. But it's still there. It's still entering your subconscious. You can never overdo that. There's times when I'm focused on other things and not really paying attention to it, but it's still getting in there and jumbling around a little bit before it leaves."

Maybe the most amazing thing is that, no matter how much he hears the constant barrage of positivity coming out of Easton's mouth -- and, oh yes, it is constant and it is loud -- he never gets sick of it. He never feels like telling his hype man to take five and just sit quietly for a little while.

"I think everybody around me probably wants to say that sometimes," said Cruz. "That's without a doubt. But they're not the ones going in there and fighting. Until they are, they're going to have to deal with Mike Easton yelling."

Which is just fine by Easton. Whatever he can do to get the champ in fighting mode, he said, it's his pleasure. Even he has to shout himself hoarse before the weekend is over.

"That's my brother. My brother from another mother. He helps me out, so I help him out. He knows I can talk to him, so that's what I do. That's my job. That, and to beat the sh-t out of him."
